'Situation tense along LoC' Bad weather prevents Army Chief from visiting Poonch

Jammu, Aug 7: Situation remained tense all along the Line of Control (LoC) and Indo-Pak border in Jammu region on Wednesday, even as the Army Chief General Bikram Singh returned to Delhi after a brief visit to review situation following the killing of five soldiers in an ambush in Poonch district on Tuesday.
Official sources said there was no let up in the tension and security forces were put on high alert all along the LoC and the border dividing the two neighboring countries. “Situation is really tense. Though there was no incident of fresh cross LoC firing, the security personnel on the both sides are avoiding free movement even outside their own posts”, an army officer in Rajouri told Greater Kashmir.
“We had specific orders to maintain extra vigil today as the army chief was scheduled to visit Rajouri and Poonch”, he said.
However, General Singh returned to Delhi without visiting Poonch. He was briefed by his Corps Commander at Nagrota on the ambush of an Indian patrol and subsequent precautionary measures taken along the borders.
The Army chief arrived here this morning to take stock of the situation along the Line of Control (LoC) in the aftermath of the killings of five Indian soldiers. Bad weather, however, forced the cancellation of his visit to Poonch district where the incident occurred.
Due to bad weather, the chopper carrying him could not take off and General Bikram Singh then traveled to Akhnoor, 30 km from here, to meet the local commanders, sources said.
On his arrival here, General Singh first visited the Nagrota headquarters of 16 Corps, which is responsible for manning the LoC in Jammu region, including the Poonch district.
He later interacted with senior army officers at the division headquarters at Rajouri. The chief also laid the wreath at the bodies of five soldiers at Jammu airport.
